The Golden Years

COURSE DESCRIPTION

According to the United States Census, the number of people age 65 and older in the year 2015 was 47.8 million.  The projected population in 2060 is 98.2 million and within this number 19.7 million will be age 85 or older. These staggering statistics will definitely impact our health care system.  The elderly population is living longer so medical and dental health care will be necessary for these individuals.  Dental professionals are very familiar that there is a link between oral health and systemic health.  This is especially important when it comes to the elderly segment of the population. As dental professionals, we need to realize and understand the struggles that these special people are encountering and how we can assist and support them in their “Golden Years.”

Objectives

Understanding of:

  • What are the “Golden Years”?
  • Explore the issues that these seasoned individuals encounter
  • Investigate potential resources
  • Dental professionals will have a better understanding of these issues so can best serve their patients during their “Golden Years”
